DE ZALZE GOLF CLUB

STELLENBOSCH · CAPE WINELANDS

Peter Matkovich's parkland course routed across three wine farms on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, with the Blaauwklippen River running through it and the Helderberg mountains standing over it.

The clubhouse and 19th hole sit within the Kleine Zalze wine estate setting, with the working cellar forming part of the backdrop to the course.

DE ZALZE GOLF CLUB

Peter Matkovich design, set among working wine farms

A Peter Matkovich design — the architect also behind Arabella, Pinnacle Point, and Steenberg. Opened in 2000. Built around vineyards, orange groves, olive trees, and lavender fields, with the oak-lined Blaauwklippen River winding through the routing.

Five sets of tees and a parkland layout that rewards accuracy over distance. Water comes into play on multiple holes. The signature 13th — a short par-four with a tee set on a boardwalk in the middle of a dam, doglegging left along the shore — is one of the most distinctive holes in the winelands. Host of the 2006 Eisenhower Trophy and the World Amateur Championships.

The course every Stellenbosch round should start or end with — because afterwards, the cellars are five minutes away.
